7 Things I Wish I Knew Before Jumping Into Fortnite Season 3

Rebecca Montgomery 4 min read

Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 3, also called the Superhero Season, has been one of the most action-packed updates in a while. With new hero powers, unique weapons, and completely reworked POIs, the game feels faster and more layered. When I started this season, I went in blind and learned a few things the hard way.

If you’re a beginner or even a returning player on PS5, this post is for you. I’m sharing the seven things I wish I had known before jumping into Season 3. These tips could save you a lot of frustration and help you enjoy the season more.

1. Hero Rank Changes Everything

This season introduces a new progression system called Hero Rank. At the start of each match, you begin at Rank C.

As you get eliminations, survive storm phases, and collect items like sprites, your rank goes up through B, A, S, and finally S+.

Each time you level up, you gain 100 health and unlock a higher tier of loot. These loot tiers are stored in color-coded Hero Caches scattered across the map. The best part? S+ unlocks every power in the game.

I didn’t realize how important this system was until I noticed other players constantly outgunning me. Ranking up early can make a huge difference.  Purchase Fortnite on PlayStation 5 for the lowest price

2. Your Powers Depend on Your Rank

Boons have been reworked as superhero powers this season. There are four:

  • Heightened Sense
  • Speed Healer
  • Stormcaller
  • Combat Acrobat

Each of these grows stronger as your Hero Rank increases.

For example, Stormcaller gives you free shield regen when you’re in the storm. But at S Rank, it also grants storm forecast abilities, so you can see the next circle in advance. I ignored these powers at first. But once I understood their benefits, I started planning my strategy around them.

Make sure you pick up a boon early and aim to level it up by pushing fights and rotating smartly. These powers often give you the edge in close fights or storm chases.

3. Choose Hero Items That Fit Your Playstyle

Each hero in the battle pass brings a special item. For example, Morgan Mist has shadow-blasting gauntlets, and Kill Switch has dual revolvers with a slow-motion shooting effect. These are powerful tools, but not every one suits every player.

In my first few matches, I tried picking up every hero item I found. I ended up with flashy gear that didn’t work for how I play. If you like close combat, focus on Morgan Mist’s gauntlets. If you prefer range and tracking, Kill Switch’s visor and revolvers might suit you better.

These items are usually found in hero caches or Academy Tech Labs. Learning where to find them and how they behave is key.

4. Mythic and Exotic Weapons Are Game-Changers

Season 3 brings in new mythic weapons like the Spire Rifle and Deadeye DMR. Plus, there are three exotic ones known as “unstable” weapons. These include:

  • Yoink Shotgun (pulls enemies toward you),
  • Voltage Burst Pistol
  • Frostfire Shotgun

You can find them in S+ caches, from bosses like Daigo or Core, or occasionally at Overlord Spires. These weapons are strong, but you’ll need to take serious risks to get them.

5. Supernova Academy Isn’t Just a Drop Spot

My favorite POI this season is Supernova Academy. It’s where the Supernovas train, and it feels like a mix of Stark Industries and the X-Mansion. But the real value is below ground, in the Academy Tech Labs.

There, you’ll find locked loot rooms that open as your Hero Rank increases. The letters on the doors match your current rank, and you’ll also see that rank on your HUD. These rooms hold rare loot and hero items.

Don’t just drop here and leave. Stick around, rank up, and open more rooms. It’s one of the few places where your progression directly unlocks your reward.

6. Use Sprites and Dash Items for Mobility

Mobility can make or break your game. This season introduces Superman Sprites and Dash Sprites. When you pick up a Superman Sprite, it fires laser beams at nearby enemies. Dash Sprites give you and nearby allies limited dashes over time.

I wasn’t paying much attention to these at first, thinking they were just gimmicks. But once I started using Dash Sprites in fights, it changed everything. They help you reposition, chase, or escape.

7. Weekly Quests Actually Matter

In previous seasons, I used to skip weekly quests. This time, I realized they help you unlock powers and rank up faster. The early game Kickstart Quests are especially useful for new players.

Quests range from visiting specific locations to delivering sprites and interacting with vaults. Completing them gives a big XP boost and can unlock unique items.

If you’re trying to level up the battle pass quickly or earn cosmetic rewards, these quests are a great way to do it. The PS5 UI makes it easier to track them mid-game without interrupting your flow.

Final Thoughts

Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 3 is one of the most dynamic updates in recent memory. But there’s a lot to take in, especially with all the new systems tied to powers, ranks, and loot. I made a lot of mistakes early on by rushing in without understanding how things worked.

If you’re new or returning to Fortnite on PS5, take a little time to learn these systems. It’ll make your matches smoother and a lot more fun.

Good luck out there.
