When I was in college, the animal science department had a male-to-female ratio of 85 percent to 15 percent. That same department now has at least 85% female employees. What occurred to create such an upheaval? I think that the animal science department (previously animal husbandry) is overflowing with women who want to be veterinarians, and that since young women have higher grades than men, they are admitted in much larger numbers than men.
This change has occurred across the board, not just in colleges. I know many female brand inspectors, drug company representatives, horse trainers, and academics who own ranches and make great pen riders and buckaroos. Ladies make excellent ditch bank irrigators and hay balers, and there are so many female comedy writers working today that it’s becoming more difficult for male chauvinist pigs like myself to earn a livelihood. Despite this, there are numerous professions in the area of animal research where women are almost non-existent. Here’s my top 10 list of occupations where women are as scarce as a dollar store price check.
ten cow purchasers- Women will have to learn to chew tobacco, swear creatively, sneer at auctioneers, kick dogs, and drink enormous quantities of whiskey if they want to enter into this profession. Cow purchasers are notorious for kicking newcomers out of auctions and refusing to allow them buy any cows. Can you image what they’ll do if they’re confronted for the first time by a female cow buyer?
9 Tallow Truck Drivers- I’ve never met a woman who drives a tallow truck. Buzzard Bill, the tallow guy who came to my house to pick up the dead ones, usually brought his wife so they could spend some quality time together.
We’re going to get through this together, Atascadero
Eight auctioneers – My first female purebred auctioneer or sale barn auctioneer has yet to meet me. There has never been a woman competitor in the World Champion Livestock Auctioneer Contest, as far as I know. Is it because males are so good at talking quickly without saying anything?
7 Sheep Shearers- I’ve never encountered a female sheep shearer, which only goes to show that women are wiser than males. Shearing sheep as a side business for many years was the toughest, dirtiest, and least gratifying job I’ve ever done. I’ve also had a number of bad jobs.
6 Female Saddle Manufacturers- I’m sure there are female saddle makers out there, but I’ve never met one. I used to attend to leather fairs when I was younger and met a lot of great female leather craftsmen, but I’ve never seen a woman’s name imprinted on a saddle. Why?
5 Breed Field Men- These are the men that assist purebred breeders with their initiatives by working for breed organizations. Before sales, they’re often heard making remarks. I’m sure there’s one out there, but they’re as uncommon as a cowboy with a 401K or SEP IRA.
I’ve gone to hundreds of auction barns, and I’ve never seen a lady on the in-gate or out-gate. Women regularly pen back cattle in auction barns, but for some reason, they haven’t broken through the glass ceiling to gate swinging.
3 Bulldoggers- At PRCA rodeos, the barrel race is the only event in which women participate. Isn’t it true that seeing ladies bulldogging or bull riding would make rodeos much more entertaining?
2 Rings of Power- I’ve worked the ring at hundreds of auctions, but I’ve never worked a cattle auction with a female ring worker. Women who operate in the ring have already invaded car and charity auctions, and I believe it will only be a matter of time until we see and hear woman ring people at cattle auctions.
1 Shepherds- What will happen if not all of the ladies in animal science departments get admitted into vet school? I’ve heard that the sheep business is in urgent need of shepherds who can live alone with a border collie for months at a time. Ladies, just imagine how little housework there is, how there is no male to clean up after, and how the sheep don’t drink, quarrel, or waste money on collectable rusted pieces and old spurs. I believe that sheep make better company for women than men, and that being a shepherd is preferable than marrying.
