Every day, the Lakers
Damian Lillard’s allegiance was put to the ultimate test after Portland’s heartbreaking first-round loss in the 2021 playoffs.
He was genuinely doubting his squad’s dedication to victory and, as a result, his own commitment to the team for the first time in his career.
The Blazers have been falling short of their aspirations for years, being booted by different opponents each year.
Naturally, with these worries on Lillard’s mind and the NBA world picking up on his unease, the star guard was summoned by LeBron James, who reportedly asked Dame up to his Brentwood residence.
(according to Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes)
From his hotel to James’ mansion, the 6-foot-3 guard took an Uber. Lillard was welcomed at the door by a house worker who brought him through the living room and into the elevator after security unlocked the gate for the car to access the property. The rooftop was the last destination.
When the elevator arrived on the top level, James and fellow Lakers player Anthony Davis sat on one side of a table, waiting for Lillard to join them on the other. Before they delved into their meal of an Italian salad, spaghetti, and a nice bottle of rosé wine, James started the discussion by recounting his time in Los Angeles.
The meeting, according to Lillard, was more of an information-gathering session among recognized peers than a platform for a recruitment pitch.
All Dame cared about was winning. While he still desired to accomplish so in Portland, partnering with the Lakers would have given him a far greater chance.
On that rooftop, the three of them discussed the possibility of forming a partnership.
“‘Bron asked what I was thinking about my situation, and I told him what I’m telling you: that all I want to do is win it all,” Lillard told Yahoo Sports. “He constructed a picture for me in his mind of how things may turn out if I left. He didn’t tell me to come to Los Angeles, and he didn’t say anything to me that I didn’t already know about the city. “I know if I were to play with y’all, it would work out because of my skill set,” I assured him, “and because of who I am and who they are.”
They all spoke about their first-round defeats and what they needed to do to better their rosters. Davis discussed his move to Southern California.
Lillard has stated his apprehension about joining any kind of a super-team.
“I was simply saying,” Lillard told Yahoo Sports, “I’m not sure if this is the direction I want to follow.” “And that pretty much sums up the discussion.”
The meeting was an hour and a half long.
Lillard agreed to keep them updated on his decision, but sources claimed the Lakers were already quietly weighing their possibilities for acquiring Lillard.
Following the hiring of Chauncey Billups and a few meetings with management, Lillard ultimately elected to remain with Portland.
Despite their 3-4 start, he is still there and sounds as dedicated to them as ever.
But it’s fascinating to consider how close Dame came to signing with the Lakers, and how many others might have been persuaded to do so after that rooftop encounter with two of the game’s finest players.
Dame-DOLLA is clearly cut from a different cloth.
