Why your AirTag can be Read by Any Other NFC-Enabled iPhone or Android Device

The Apple AirTag is a small device that tracks physical items such as wallets, keys, or backpacks. Utilising Near Field Communication (NFC), the AirTag can be read and interacted with by any other device enabled with NFC. This allows users to check their lost-and-found devices online or send notifications and alerts when their item is moved outside a predefined range. While this versatile feature ensures that users always know the location of their tagged items, it also raises some concerns regarding privacy and security. This article will discuss NFC, how it relates to AirTags, and why any other NFC-enabled iPhone or Android device can read your item.

How an AirTag Works

The AirTag is a small, pocket-sized device that can track and locate items like keys, wallets, and more. It uses Bluetooth and NFC technology to help you track lost items. With NFC technology, your AirTag can be “read” from any other NFC-enabled device, like an iPhone or Android, allowing you to locate a lost item. In this article, we’ll explain how AirTag works and how it can be used to help you find lost items.

What is an AirTag?

An AirTag is a small device used to locate lost items with the help of Apple’s Find My App. AirTags have a built-in Near Field Communication (NFC) antenna, a coin battery, and an accelerometer. They are connected to Apple IDs and allow users to find lost items using their iPhones.

AirTag’s NFC tag consists of two components- an 8 byte Unique Identifier code (UUID) and a TLV (Type Length Value) format record containing information about the tag item to. This information can include brand name, model number, colour etc. When another NFC-enabled device gets in proximity of an AirTag, it reads this UUID, connects it to the information in the TLV record, and sends it back to Apple’s Find My Network.

Moreover, this same unique ID activates its sound notification system which assists in finding nearby objects. It uses its accelerometer for motion tracking; when your AirTag stops moving suddenly or has been stationary for a while, it triggers its sound alert, which gradually increases in volume until you can find it.

In short, AirTags are an extremely convenient tool for keeping track of misplaced items due to their pairing with iPhones via the Find My app and their ability to send out alerts when your belongings are close by but out of sight!

How Does an AirTag Work?

An Apple AirTag is a wireless tracking device that wirelessly communicates with Apple devices, such as iPhones and iPads, via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). An AirTag contains a small chip called a Near Field Communications (NFC) tag, which any other NFC-enabled iPhone or Android device can read.

An AirTag sends out a signal every few seconds. When an iPhone or Android smartphone with the Find My app is close enough to pick up this signal, it displays the location of your AirTag on a map within the Find My app. This allows you to easily locate your lost items quickly and accurately.

Your iPhone or Android device will also give audible alerts when you are close to your lost item so you know when you’ve found it. Additionally, suppose someone else finds your item and has an NFC-enabled smartphone. In that case, they can tap their phone against it and use Apple’s Precision Finding technology to get directions back to you.

The most important thing about using an AirTag is that it cannot track any object without pairing each object to Apple’s iCloud service in advance. Without iCloud service enabled for any pair of objects, no one else can track them in any way unless they physically look for them manually themselves.

Lost AirTag Can Be Read by Any Other NFC-enabled iPhone or Android Device

The Lost AirTag is a tracking device used to locate lost items. It utilises Near Field Communication (NFC) technology so that any other NFC-enabled iPhone or Android device can read it.

This means that if you have lost your AirTag, you can quickly and easily locate it with the help of another person’s device. But, first, let’s explore how this works and the potential issues it can cause.

What is NFC?

Near-field communication (NFC) is a technology that enables two devices to exchange data when they come into close contact with each other. Essentially, it’s a way for objects to “talk” to each other and share data.

NFC is commonly used in smartphones, credit cards and loyalty cards for contactless payment systems, and can also be used for security purposes, such as unlocking your phone using an NFC tag. All iPhones since the 6S support NFC capabilities.

The lost AirTag will be found by any NFC device when it’s within 25 feet of the tag, as the device will detect any passive NFC tags within range and alert the user with an audible headphone tone or chime. Android phones can detect passive NFC tags by default; however, many later models of Android phones require you to enable NFC in Settings before being able to detect these tags.

How Can an AirTag be Read by Any Other NFC-Enabled iPhone or Android Device?

AirTags are Apple’s unique take on a Bluetooth-enabled tracking device. They make it easy to track items you don’t want to lose, such as wallets, keys or bags. An AirTag can also be read by any other Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled iPhone or Android device using Apple’s NFC Reader app. This app is available in the App Store and Google Play Store.

When an NFC-enabled phone approaches an AirTag, the software within the app reads a small amount of data encoded in the AirTag’s secure element (SE). The SE is a secure storage module within the AirTag that can store encrypted data about the tag and its environment, such as its last known location. The NFC Reader’s built-in reader technology then parses this data and returns it to your device with instructions on how to track it down if lost.

The process is automatic and essentially invisible to users. You do not need to sign in or pair your AirTag with any other phones as long as they are NFC-enabled. All you need is your iPhone or Android phone with an updated version of iOS 14 or later for iPhones and Android 10 for Android devices for them to read your AirTags.

Conclusion

AirTag has several useful features that make it durable, functional, and convenient. It is easy to set up and access via an iPhone or Android device. The major advantage of using AirTag lies in its ability to be read by any other NFC-enabled iPhone or Android device. This allows users to keep track of their items without requiring them to own an iPhone or be near one, which makes AirTag far more versatile than many other tracking solutions. Additionally, since AirTag can be monitored without needing a WiFi connection, it can easily be used in remote locations and while travelling. Finally, using AirTag with Apple’s other devices such as iCloud, users can enjoy the benefits of comprehensive item-tracking at all times.
