Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends, is making headway into diversity efforts over 2020. The company has pledged to make a $1 million investment in companies that are focused on increasing representation and inclusion in the game industry.

Riot Games has been making at least some efforts to police itself since it was called out by its own employees and the state of California as a truly toxic and sexist workplace, including creating a diversity and inclusion report that outlines the company’s efforts to hire female, Black, and underrepresented minorities.
The company’s 2020 self-report is out, and it claims a 2% to 3% increase in total representation, new recruits, and leadership positions for women and minority groups in comparison to 2019. One statistic was down, as new female employees fell from 32 percent to 28 percent.
Riot’s philanthropic efforts are also highlighted in the report, including a $1 million pledge to its Social Impact Fund, $10,000 grants to the ACLU Foundation and The Innocence Project, and the launch of an Underrepresented Founders Program with a $10 million pledge to underrepresented and Black gaming startups.
Following a 2018 exposé of the company’s “bro culture,” which included sexual discrimination and harassment, Riot Games has become a divisive figure in the gaming industry. Several developers and high-ranking officials were implicated in the incident, which resulted in a developer labor dispute and walk-out. Former employees and the state of California have filed lawsuits alleging that Riot is refusing to assist with the inquiry.
